Melody He
Co-founder & Partner, Co-Head of Spartan Advisory
Melody is a Co-Founder of Spartan Group and leads the group’s advisory business. She works side by side with the crypto industry’s leading founders and projects on their fundraising and strategic development in Asia.
Since founding Spartan, Melody has worked closely with WilderWorld, BitDAO, Qredo, Dapper Labs / Flow, Solana, Blockstack, Origin, Deribit and other leading crypto projects. Melody has been an active early stage tech investor over the past decade and an early investor in blockchain companies.
Prior founding Spartan group, Melody was an investment partner at MOX/SOSV, a global top accelerator VC. She started her career in the Investment Banking Division of Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong where she worked on numerous financing and M&A transactions including the Baidu IPO.
Casper B. Johansen
Co-founder & Partner, Co-Head of Spartan Advisory
Based in Asia since 2004, Casper has worked as an investment banker, tech entrepreneur, corporate executive and private equity investor.
Casper co-heads Spartan’s advisory business, which works with industry leaders in the blockchain and decentralized finance space. Prior to Spartan, Casper spent 10 years in the Investment Banking Division at Goldman Sachs in their London, Hong Kong, Beijing and Singapore offices, where he led and worked on more than $20 billion of M&A and capital markets transactions.
Casper has been an active tech angel investor for over a decade, and is an active blockchain and digital assets investor. Prior to his corporate career, Casper was an officer in the Royal Danish Air Force and received a bachelor and master of laws from Aarhus University in Denmark.
Kelvin Koh
Co-founder & Partner, CIO, Spartan Capital
Kelvin has over 20 years of experience in investment and research across multiple asset classes and geographies.
Prior to serving as CIO of Spartan Capital, the hedge fund arm of Spartan Group, Kelvin was Managing Partner of Trident Venture Partners, an early stage venture capital firm.
Previously, Kelvin was a Partner and China CIO at Indus Capital, an Asia-focused equity hedge fund with over $6.5 billion in assets under management. Before joining Indus Capital, Kelvin was also Partner and Head of Research at Goldman Sachs, where he spent 18 years across its Singapore, Hong Kong and Beijing offices. He started his career there as a research analyst, during which he garnered top rankings from Institutional Investor, AsiaMoney and Greenwich Associates for his industry-leading analysis.
Leeor Groen
Executive Director, Spartan Advisory
Leeor brings over 8+ years of experience in dealmaking, investing into and advising technology companies across Europe and Asia. Prior to joining Spartan, Leeor was a Partner at Swiss venture firm BVV where he built an extensive track record backing early-and growth-stage companies. An early mover in the Fintech and Digital Asset ecosystem, Leeor has been fully dedicated to the emerging industry since 2016. Having spent his career at the intersection of finance and technology, Leeor holds several board positions and draws on a wealth of international experience having lived and worked professionally across the UK, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Singapore and Australia.
Shaun Heng
Head of Spartan Labs
Shaun has over 8+ years of experience in investment banking and tech entrepreneurship. Prior to joining Spartan, Shaun was the VP of Growth & Operations at CoinMarketCap where he led a team of 40 people globally and scaled products that contributed to a 10x growth in traffic and 4x growth in revenue in under 20 months. His past life includes being an investment banker turned corporate development executive at a Series C company turned founder & CEO of a Pre-Series A company.
Shaun is passionate about building and scaling startups and is excited about solving growth and strategy challenges while building high-performing teams. He is also an active angel investor and advisor, focusing on Web3, marketplaces, fintech and B2B SaaS early-stage companies.
Shaun graduated from the National University of Singapore with a B.A. in Arts (Economics) in 2013.
Adrian Lai
Creative and Design Lead, Spartan Labs
Adrian is a seasoned creative and tech industry veteran. He has worked in nearly every capacity of a product team (Founder, Designer, PM) and helped brands like Nike, Red Bull, Converse, Beats by Dre, 88rising enter the the China market. He is also an active angel investor and advisor, focusing on the intersection of culture, creativity and technology.
Adrian graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in Economics and B.S. in Communications with honors.
Yap Jun Hao
Tech Lead, Spartan Labs
Jun Hao is a crypto tech veteran and has been dedicated to building for Web3 to cross each chasm in its technology adoption lifecycle since 2015.
Prior to joining Spartan, Jun Hao was the co-creator and Director of Engineering at StraitsX, operating a multi-chain & multi-local stablecoin (XSGD) platform supporting billions in transactions annually. He grew a team from scratch to over 50 people globally in 4.5 years. He is also an active angel investor and technical advisor, focusing on Web3 early stage companies.
Jun Hao graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Computing (Computer Science) with Honours in 2017.
Bart Mahendran
Associate, Spartan Advisory
Prior to joining Spartan Group, Bart worked with SOSV (#2 most active seed investor in the world) in Shanghai, helping early-stage projects draw investments and establish a foothold in Asia. It was here where he first learned about Blockchain and digital assets. Since then, Bart has also worked within the assets trading space, servicing brokers in APAC. His experience in blockchain research includes on-chain surveillance and transaction monitoring. Bart also has Management Consulting experience during his stint with Accenture, where he worked on projects to help digitize Singapore's supply chain ecosystem. Bart is an engineering graduate from the National University of Singapore, and previously served as a military officer with the Guards Formation (Singapore Armed Forces).
Chetanya Khandelwal
Associate, Spartan Advisory
Prior to joining the Spartan group, Chetanya interned at Greenhill & Co. as an investment banking analyst. In the past, he has worked on various transactions including private equity, venture capital, and mergers & acquisitions. He discovered blockchain and cryptos in early 2018 during his academic exchange program in Boston. Impressed by the huge potential offered by the blockchain technology, he founded the HKU Blockchain Club - the first-ever student-run blockchain society in Hong Kong. There he created a platform to equip students with the necessary skills to carry out blockchain projects in the form of enterprises or academics.
Chetanya received a bachelor's degree with the highest distinction in Economics and Finance in 2020.
Aviel Tan
Analyst, Spartan Advisory
Prior to joining Spartan Group, Aviel had accumulated experience in an Asset Management firm, Gunung Capital as an Investment Analyst, as well as KPMG where he was a part of the Financial Due Diligence team for M&A transactions.
Aviel had always had a keen interest in compounding wealth, he started off investing in traditional financial markets and his penchant for technology drew him into the digital asset space where he was captivated by the utility of blockchain and decentralized applications.
Aviel graduated from Nanyang Technological University Singapore with a degree in Economics, and is currently working towards earning the CFA charter.
Andrew Chua
Analyst, Spartan Advisory
Prior to joining Spartan Group, Andrew supported TMT clients in the region on execution of advisory, capital markets and leveraged financing mandates as an Investment Banking Senior Analyst at BNP Paribas. In his time at BNP Paribas, he led the execution of several advisory and fund raising mandates; most notably the merger of Storms and iCandy to develop AAA Web 3 games in the region.
Andrew holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from National University of Singapore.
Dana Gan
Analyst, Spartan Advisory
Prior to Spartan, Dana worked with Allianz Consulting APAC, where she worked on global strategic/market entry projects. She has been active with her personal crypto portfolio as she finds the fundamentals and narratives of digital assets intriguing. She strongly believes that both investing and business opportunities within this emerging and nascent industry are unparalleled.
Dana graduated from Nanyang Technological University with double degrees in Actuarial Science and Accountancy in 2021. She has also represented her school in various national & international business case competitions.
Mickey Punthep
Analyst, Spartan Advisory
Prior to joining Spartan Group, Mickey supported early-stage startups in Thailand with corporate strategy and fundraising as a venture capital associate at Alpha Founders Capital. Mickey has also garnered experience in investment banking and private equity, leading multiple M&A transactions. He came upon Crypto and Defi in November 2022 and saw its massive potential.
Mickey holds a Bachelor of Finance & Banking from Assumption University in Thailand.
Tommy Chang
Investment Associate, Spartan Capital
Having discovered crypto in early 2017 and actively invested in dozens of projects and NFTs, Tommy believes in a decentralized web 3.0 and an open financial system. Tommy acquired his experience with tokenomics as well as capital raising through working with Spartan’s clients and portfolio companies including Solana, Dapper Labs, Bybit, and FTX.
Prior to joining Spartan, Tommy was head of research at Red Building Capital, a venture firm with a focus of blockchain investment. During the crypto boom of 2017, Tommy co-founded Block Panther, an ICO investing platform that served thousands of crypto investors worldwide through primary market investing. He was also a product manager at Quanta Computer and helped deliver server products to clients including Dropbox, Uber, and Microsoft.
Tommy graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.A. in business in 2014.
Gabriel Tan
Investment Analyst, Spartan Capital
Prior to Spartan, Gabriel practised as a M&A lawyer with Allen & Gledhill LLP, a leading Southeast Asian law firm. He first became interested in cryptocurrencies when he interned at itBit during its early days in 2014 and since then, he has been actively researching and investing in the space. He holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business Management from the Singapore Management University.
Sanat Kapur
Investment Analyst, Spartan Capital
Prior to joining Spartan, Sanat worked as a data scientist at Uber on the policy team. Sanat has previously worked as an analyst at NERA, an economic consulting firm, where he had the chance to work on cryptocurrency related financial litigation. He's been excited about cryptocurrencies since 2016, and has been actively investing and conducting research in the space. He received undergraduate degrees in Mathematics-Statistics and Economics from Columbia University.
Aditya Saraf
Investment Analyst, Spartan Capital
Prior to Spartan, Aditya started his career with Mu Sigma, a data science firm in Bangalore, during which he jumped into crypto as an enthusiast in early 2017. He pursued algorithmic trading in the crypto derivatives market while also focusing on fundamental strategies. Aditya holds a Bachelor of Technology from NIT Surathkal and an MBA in business administration from Singapore Management University.
Calvin Poon
Investment Analyst, Spartan Capital
Prior to Spartan, Calvin was an associate at Sora Ventures, an Asia-based blockchain VC dedicated to digital asset and blockchain investments. He was responsible for the deal structuring, research and post-investment management.
Calvin’s blockchain career began at OKEx in late 2017, one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world. He then worked at Shanghai’s Guotai Junan Securities as an emerging tech research intern, specializing in blockchain application and scalability research. Calvin later joined Coinsuper, a Hong Kong crypto exchange, as an ICO analyst, where he scouted and analyzed ICO projects and assisted in business development.
Calvin obtained a Bachelor of Economics and International Relations degree from Boston University.
Lionel Pek
Investment Analyst, Spartan Capital
Prior to joining Spartan, Lionel worked as a legal counsel at Integra Partners, a venture fund focused on fintech and healthtech. He previously practised as a lawyer in the M&A department of Wong Partnership LLP. Lionel’s interest in crypto started during his undergraduate days and he has since been actively engaging, researching and investing in the space. Lionel holds a Bachelor of Laws from the Singapore Management University (double major in Law and Finance).
Cody Poh
Investment Analyst, Spartan Capital
Prior to joining Spartan Capital, Cody was a consultant with McKinsey & Company in Hong Kong focusing on the healthcare industry. He also interned with Neuberger Berman and Morgan Stanley before his consulting career. Cody first became interested in cryptocurrencies when he was running Rookie Fund, one of the earliest student-run venture funds in Asia. Since then he had been investing and researching about the space. Cody received his undergraduate degree in accounting and finance from the University of Hong Kong in 2021.
Yasmine Karimi
Investment Analyst, Spartan Capital
Prior to Spartan, Yasmine was a research analyst at Nansen. She is an ambassador of the gen z in crypto and passionate about blockchain technology and Web3. She is enthusiastic about the Metaverse and is, amongst other things, founder of CryptoKidZ and co-founder of Menaverse gaming guild.
Yasmine is an undergraduate student at Hong Kong University-Sciences Po Paris (double major in Political Science and Quantitative Finance).
Derek Lim
Head of Research, Spartan Labs
Prior to joining Spartan Group, Derek was the Head of Crypto Insights at Bybit, a top cryptocurrency exchange. There, he led a team of research analysts to produce reports ranging from on-chain analyses, market outlook, thesis validation and deep dives (into the various issues within the space) both for internal consumption and as external thought-leadership articles. Derek’s research team also supported BitDAO and Mirana Ventures, Bybit’s Venture arm, in various capacities too. On the side, Derek is also a freelance Crypto Journalist at Tech in Asia, one of the largest tech publications within the region.
Derek holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Sociology) from the National University of Singapore (NUS). His expertise in and love for Sociology has helped him to thrive within the web3 space as he is able to conceive of the various blockchain ecosystems within the space as microcosms of the larger societies that we live in. He is passionate about concepts like governance (voting schemes), consensus, and — as flawed as it currently is — the concept of decentralization.
Dickson Lai
Research Associate, Spartan Labs
Before joining Spartan Group, Dickson was a senior Research Analyst at Bybit, a top cryptocurrency exchange. As a research analyst, Dickson is adept at crafting interesting and unique theses and narratives based on a multiplicity of data points. At Bybit, he was the brainchild behind many deep dive pieces that were widely shared within the crypto community. These include a deep dive into the decentralized nature of stablecoins, a piece on Apecoin, and a granular analysis of Moonbirds.
Dickson holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the National University of Singapore (NUS). On top of his interest within the field of data analysis, Dickson is deeply passionate about venture building too. This was largely shaped by his wealth of experience within the venture building space during his time with NUS Enterprise and NTUitive.
Gabriel Foo
Research Associate, Spartan Labs
Gabriel is a DeFi, NFT and Web3 enthusiast with a knack for fundamental research, project incubation and early-stage ventures.
Prior to joining Spartan, Gabriel started off investing in stocks before fully transitioning to cryptocurrencies in 2021. While publishing his crypto investment theses on Twitter, he dived into project advisory and helped launch HellCatsNFT, a $5.5 million social NFT project on Terra.
Venturing into Web3, Gabriel joined Delphi Labs to help incubate Mars Protocol, a DeFi credit facility on Terra. At the same time, he was a freelance research analyst and angel investor at GT Capital, a venture capital DAO that backs builders of the next generation of DeFi. Subsequently, he pursued a career as a Senior Research Analyst at Bybit. There he helped educate non-crypto natives and build the Web3 economy through his writings.
Gabriel graduated from Sunway University and Lancaster University with a double degree in Accounting and Finance in 2019.
Edmund Chua
Research Associate, Spartan Labs
Prior to joining Spartan Group, Edmund was a cofounder at Hyperion Alpha, a VC that was focused on blockchain investments within the Polygon and Solana ecosystem. He also cofounded CryptOn Mining, a cryptocurrency mining start up in 2018.
Edmund is deeply interested in the applications of Decentralized Finance (DeFi) within the Web3 ecosystem and strongly believes that DeFi offers unparalleled opportunities for the compounding of wealth.
Edmund holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from Nanyang Technological University and a Master of Science (Project Management) from National University of Singapore.
Jiwon Kang
Head of Investor Relations
Starting her career at Goldman Sachs Investment Research as a research analyst, Jiwon has over 14 years of experience across equity research, capital markets and marketing and investor relations in alternative asset management. Prior to joining Spartan Capital, Jiwon was a member of the investor relations group at Och-Ziff Capital Management in Hong Kong, one of the largest alternative asset management firms with $48 billion in assets under management at the time of hiring, where she focused on fundraising and managing relationships with major Asian institutional investors. Prior to that, Jiwon was a Vice President at Deutsche Bank Equity Capital Markets in Hong Kong, where she was involved in originating and syndicating a number of mega IPOs and capital raisings for Asian corporations.
Teo Li Hui
Legal & Compliance Officer
Prior to joining Spartan, Li Hui was a litigation lawyer at Allen & Gledhill, one of the leading law firms in Singapore, where her practice encompassed employment, white-collar crime, regulatory and compliance, and corporate governance matters. Li Hui graduated from the Singapore Management University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Laws and was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2019.
Yvonne Chen
Head of Operations
Yvonne has extensive experience in operations and marketing. Prior to joining Spartan Group, Yvonne was an operations executive at Ternary Fund Management where she handled fund operations and a number of support functions. Before that, she works in various marketing and operations roles with Maplebear Explorers, Koplina and Singapore Airlines.
Edward Lam
Finance Associate
Prior to joining Spartan Group, Edward worked as an accountant in Ernst & Young. During his time there, Edward assisted in the auditing for clients from various industries, which was where he developed an interest in the industry of digital assets and cryptocurrencies. Edward graduated from University of Salford and received First Class Honours in BSc Accounting and Finance in 2018.
Norman Kwok
Business Operations Analyst, Spartan Labs
Prior to joining Spartan, Norman was an auditor under KPMG. During his time there, he assisted in auditing clients in the technology space, including a successful U.S. IPO. His interest in crypto began in university where he was exposed to decentralised finance and NFTs, and began to grow his own crypto portfolio. Fascinated by decentralised applications, he has been actively investing in the space and writing about it online since then. Norman holds a Bachelor of Accountancy from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
Joanna Chow
Operations Analyst
Joanna has 11 years of operations, marketing and business development experience across various industries including fund management, merchant banking, computer and IT services. Prior to joining Spartan, she was an IT consultant at M1 AsiaPac where she handled business development strategy and supporting role to the sales and finance team. Before that, she works as a marketing executive with Global Asset Inc, Sunmat Industries and Citibank.
Kelly Lau
Operations Analyst
Prior to joining Spartan Group, Kelly worked as a client services specialist at BIPO Services managing payroll, accounting and tax reporting. She has 8 years of experience in operations, specialising in HR, administration and corporate secretarial. Kelly holds a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology from La Trobe University.
